Operation Big Brew Up at Culdrose

Published: 21 Oct 2013

The annual Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA) ‘Big Brew Up’ tea party came to Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose once again and attracted huge support from across the base.

Taking the lead on the tea party this year was Maritime Aviation Support Force (MASF) who staged the event in their Engineering Logistics Section with the help of Petty Officer Dominic Meehan who co-ordinated the appeal that raises funds for the armed forces. Starting the event at 10 am to coincide with the daily ‘Stand-easy’ on the base, Dominic had arranged for cakes and biscuits to be donated by various members of MASF, including home baked delectable delights from Barry Tonkins and Dominic’s wife Tracy.

Supporters from across the airfield from many departments came to the charity fundraising event from the senior level of management to some of the partners of serving personnel with young children, in the extended ‘stand easy’ over £152 was raised, all going  towards  SSAFA Culdrose.

SSAFA Culdrose is a newly formed committee and part of the SSAFA community as a whole, they are there to provide lifelong support for the forces and their families and have over 7,500 volunteers nationwide. With over 500 registered events in the UK and around the world, including in Nepal, Cyprus, Germany, Slovenia, Washington and Kenya; they served thousands upon thousands of cups of tea and coffee as well as many thousands pieces of cake as part of their annual fundraising event.

Dominic Meehan said, "We are absolutely thrilled with the result and would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support. The Big Brew Up goes a long way in helping SSAFA Forces Help continue to support 50,000 people in the Armed Forces community every year.”
