On this day 24 April 1959 RNAS Portland commissioned as HMS OSPREY.

Portland had been used as an occasional seaplane base pre-war and had some wartime use under control Lee-on-Solent.

After commissioning, it was the base for Wasp small ships flights between December 1964 and March 1988, and for Lynx small ships flights from July 1982. Paid off 31 March 1999 and function transferred to RNAS Yeovilton.
