Future Directors Film Junglies

Published: 13 Jun 2012

BUDDING film directors have been following the lives of servicemen during a visit to 848 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton.

Alice Bird, 18, Katie Gilham, 17, Liberty Gatcombe, 17, and Jenna Field, 18, spent three days with aviators from the Commando Helicopter Force interviewing and filming personnel from within the Squadron.

The four Yeovil College media students explored how life in the Forces can affect the families of service personnel and the work involved in becoming an aviator in a 30 minute documentary. This film would then form part of their final phase of their diploma course in Media studies.

The four teenagers spent three days with 848 Squadron aviators Captain Chris Edan RM and Leading Air Crewman Simon Evans, who are currently undergoing flying training. The visit then culminated in an interview with the Squadron Commanding Officer, Commander Rich Sutton MBE.

After the visit Alice Bird added,

“We had a fantastic time filming our documentary and we now fully understand the psychological pressures and physical challenges an aviator has to endure to become fly in the Fleet Air Arm and were also impressed to hear about the tremendous support provided by their families. Our documentary is now very close to completion and we will be sending a copy of the completed film to the squadron – I’m confident they will like the finished product. We are now looking forward to re-visiting the Junglies to complete a follow up piece.”
