24-hour gym at Culdrose

Published: 19 Feb 2013

A 24 hour new gym capability has been launched at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose.

On 15 Feb the 24 hour access facility in the gymnasium was officially opened by the Commanding Officer, Captain Willie Entwistle OBE MVO RN, aimed at all military and civilian personnel plus dependants based at the Air Station ensuring that they can all remain fit for life.

This initiative came about when it was evident that the normal opening hours of the gymnasium did not suit the needs of all the various working patterns of the many squadrons and departments throughout Culdrose, therefore; it was decided that the installation of a 24 hour access system would be the best way ahead.

Royal Navy Physical Training staff are very pleased that their ‘customers’ can now remain fighting fit 24/7 and Leading Physical Trainer Leah Ravuoco, with a typical tongue in cheek Naval remark said: “Our PO (Matthew Crouch) is determined to get massive for the summer and Field Gun and he will definitely be in here at midnight”.

The Commanding Officer congratulated Chief Petty Officer ‘Bill’ Bailey and Mr Pete Cole who both work at the gym and put in a lot of hours to get the system working.

Today, more than ever, the Royal Navy deploys globally to carry out its main role of ‘Protecting the Nation’s interest’ in demanding environments and the need to remain fit and ready to operate is vital to success. Captain Entwistle said: “Continuing to improve the ability for the men and women of the Naval Service to keep fit remains a key ‘force multiplier’”.

The total price of the project was £15,745 paid for by a very generous donation of £10,000 from the Royal British Legion and made available with the balance generated by Culdrose Wider Marketing Initiatives.

Electronic swipe access key fobs are available for a £10.00 deposit for all military personnel and civilians and dependants that have a Sports Centre Facility pass.
