GLARAC Norway Event 2020Norway
Update on the Norway Event:
Dear GLARAC Member,
I hope this email finds you well.
The GLARAC committee wanted to update members on two events occurring next year.
Firstly, the Plymouth weekend will run from Friday 5th June to Sunday 7th June 2020. Further details will be published on the website as, and when, they become available.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the Mayflower celebrations being held in Plymouth throughout 2020 members are advised to book accommodation early!!!
Secondly, we have received an update from George Godley with regards to the planned trip to Norway in June 2020. Anybody interested in this event can contact George via email: firstname.lastname@example.org . George will shortly be in contact with those people who have already expressed an interest.
George has written -
It is my intention to arrive in "Harstad" late afternoon on June 7th, on June the 8th I plan a boat charter departing from "Sto" we will need to leave "Harstad" early in the morning & traveling by car /bus (depending on the amount of people arriving on the 7th June), the boat will depart "Sto" & travel to one of the co-ordinates matching one of the reference's to the location where the action of the ships took place, a short service to be held & wreaths to be layed then return to "Sto" & "Harstad".
For members who attend HMS Drake before departing for Norway & arriving on 8th June we would meet up with them at the hotel upon returning from the boat trip.
On 9th June a coach would be hired to take us to the "Trondenes" church then a wreath laying at the memorial plaque followed by a visit to the adjacent Historical Centre. The group would then travel onto the Naval Base to visit the "Adolf Guns" then on the return trip visit the "Harstad" Cemetery to lay a wreath at Jack Pilkington's grave & return to the hotel.
On 10th June another coach trip to visit Narvik museum, this time we should be travelling over the new Norwegian "Super Bridge which was being constructed in 2015 this should shorten the trip considerably, on the return journey we will visit the Narvik Cemetery where Fred Mills grave is situated this year we will have the honour of being accompanied by Fred Mills Daughter, then we return to the hotel.
June 11th, depending on the group another boat trip can be arranged to allow the people who arrived on the 8th June to do a similar trip but the location would be "Toppsundet" which was the initial trip in 2010 using a landing craft & in 2015 using a 110 year old trawler called "Harald", this boat was boarded directly outside the hotel.
On 12th June is departure day for home.
The above is just an outline & will depend on many things as costs will depend on the number of people attending each venue, I have already re-established contact with the boat charter company who served us very well in 2015 & will be contacting the hotel to reserve bookings also as per 2015, I have been in contact with Harald Isachen (the local Norwegian Historian) who has been extremely helpful on all previous occasions he again has offered his services.
I trust the above information will clarify things for everybody.
