The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal 2012

Published: 16 Nov 2011

Issue criteria - lots qualify for the medal to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee but not the Veterans of the Armed Forces even those who have served during the Queen's reign.

After the various sagas associated with issues of Jubilee medals, it has been noted that a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal will be issued for Service personnel in 2012. However as in the issue of the Golden Jubilee Medal it is currently the case that Veterans with Service in the Armed Forces will not be eligible. This includes those who are currently serving but will have left the Services by the date of issue of the medal (perhaps due to redundancies in the Armed Forces).

A question in Parliament was asked about this specific issue.

A Petition has been set up on the Government petition Website to attempt to rectify what is obviously an oversight in that Veterans are once more being denied a right to wear a medal celebrating a Jubilee.

Just announced - 10 November 2011.

Andrew Robathan (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans), Defence; South Leicestershire, Conservative).

The Government have agreed that there should be a fresh review of the rules governing the award of military medals. This will be conducted by an independent reviewer with full consultation with interested parties. The scope of the review and who is to lead it are expected to be announced shortly.
