802 (Sea Hurricanes) and 883 (Swordfish) Squadrons sailed in the escort carrier HMS AVENGER covering convoy PQ18 to North Russia. AVENGER’s aircraft shot down five German Ju88 and He111 torpedo-bombers of more than forty aircraft brought down by convoy defences. 27 of 43 merchantmen arrived safely.
